This time of year is focused heavily on gifts and finding the greatest gift at the greatest bargain. In 2 Corinthians 9, the apostle Paul writing about material gifts. One group of believers were taking up an offering for another group of believers. Then he shifts his attention from material gifts to God’s gift of sending Jesus to earth to be our substitute, and he just can't find the words to describe it. Paul says in 2 Corinthians 9:15:
ESV, "Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!"
NASB, "Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!"
NLT, "Thank God for this gift too wonderful for words!"
Jesus is, inexpressible, indescribable and I love the way the NLT puts it, "too wonderful for words!" Why? 4 Reasons.
1. Christ's Purpose (Luke 2:11)- Christ came to save His people from the penalty of their sin.
2. Christ's Nature (John 1:1, 14)- Christ is the eternal Word who took on flesh and dwelt among us and humbled Himself to the death of the cross.
3. Grace (Romans 5:8)- God owes sinner's nothing. We are enemies of God, but yet God loved us even while we were His enemies and sent His Son to pay our sin debt and reconcile us to God.
4. Christ's Effect- We are forgiven (Psalm 103:11-12), We are adopted into God's family as first-born sons (Ephesians 2:12-13), We receive the Spirit (Romans 5:2-5), We are given peace that passes all understanding (Romans 5:1), and most of all we will be with God for all of eternity (1 John 3:2)!
Thoughts on the glorious Gospel of Christ that gives life only through the death of Christ and the life of the believer being strengthened by their death to self.
About Me
- dj lowrance
- Disciple of Christ. Husband of a beautiful wife. Father of 3 beautiful girls. Seminary graduate desiring to pastor on the west coast or where ever God leads in the near future. Football/MMA Enthusiast. Theologically I unashamedly proclaim the gospel that is exclusive to the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ received by grace alone through faith alone. I abhor any teaching other than this gospel as Paul said, "if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed." My desire in my life and ministry is that I exalt Christ and stay true to the text of Scripture. Grace and Peace, Soli Deo Gloria.
